older%20woman.jpgWhen the NAACP founded the National Voter Fund, its mission was to engage in issue advocacy, educate voters on candidates' stands on civil rights, and increase voter turnout in the African-American community through voter education and non-partisan registration and get-out-the-vote efforts.

During the 2000 election cycle, NVF quickly and effectively developed and implemented voter contact programs in every region of the country, which led to historic turnouts of African-American voters. NVF worked in 44 localities in 17states and, in conjunction with the nonpartisan efforts of the NAACP Voter Empowerment Program, realized accomplishments such as:

  • Registering 160,000 voters.
  • Mobilizing 2 million voters to turn out at the polls.
  • Increasing black voter participation by 22% in New York.
  • Increasing black voter participation by 58% in Florida.
  • Increasing black voter participation by 148% in Missouri.

In 2004, NVF utilized precinct-based collaborative field programming to carry out its civic engagement activities in key states. NVF maintains an active voter file database for over 1.3 million African-American voters in 15 states. NVF has the distinction of having one of the most successful African-American led voter engagement programs in 2004.

From 2002 through 2006, NVF registered over 225,000 new voters in 12 states and conducted direct voter contact through mail, phone and canvas to over 1.8 million voters.

In 2006, NVF was able to develop a number of voter outreach efforts in four key states where the margin of victory was directly tied to the high turnout of African-American voters in Ohio, Michigan, Maryland, and Virginia. NVF’s voter outreach efforts consisted of direct mail, phone, neighborhood canvassing, print ads in African-American media, and election protection efforts. Through these combined outreach efforts, NVF made multiple voter contact to over 450,000 voters in the closing days of this historic election. Through these voter outreach efforts, NVF informed voters about new voting restrictions such as photo ID requirements through information dissemination and promotion of the NAACP's Election Protection Hotline 866-OUR-VOTE.

NVF ranks in the top 4 of organizations nationally who registered the most voters through the historic 2004 national voter registration campaign, with 214,964 voter registrations submitted. The NAACP and the NAACP NVF collectively stand as one of the most effective African-American led voter registration and mobilization efforts by registering over 348,000 new voters. NVF employed over 2,500 volunteers in 8 battleground states who canvassed their communities and helped produce a historic turnout of African Americans in every region of the country.
